We want to showcase locally based food manufacturers, from Bread and Cheese to Fruit and Veg and everything in between. We want to highlight local outlets of locally grown or produced food, Deli's to Farm Shops, Farmers Markets and traditional Butchers Bakers and Greengrocers.
Why buy Local Food?
Local Food Supports Local Farm Families.
Local food produced by local Farmers employ local people. Locally bought food sustains local farmers.
Local Food Builds Community.
When you buy direct from the farmer at a Farmers Market, you are re-establishing a time-honoured connection. The people selling you products are the people producing them. You have the opportunity to get to know the farmers and help with the understanding of how the food is produced why it tastes as it does and the opportunity in many cases to sample something you have not tried before.
Some Farmers may provide access to their farm where your children and grandchildren can go to learn about nature and agriculture. Relationships built on understanding and trust can thrive.
Local Food Preserves Open Space.
A Farm uses open spaces for food production without that food production the open space would quite possibly be built on.
Lower Food Miles
Despite improvements made in recent years much of the food in supermarkets has travelled many miles; locally produced food has not. There are studies and figures available to show the differences but common sense tells us that is so.
Better Taste
Supermarket food has to be produced to withstand many miles of travel, in some cases thousands, so much of it is treated or specifically grown for certain characteristics. For example Tomatoes are grown to have a uniform colour, size and shape as well as a thick skin to prevent bruising en route flavour is very low on the priority list.
Variety of Flavour
Locally produced food is grown for flavour and diversity rather than the stark uniformity of supermarket produce. Local food produces a range of different varieties each with its own specific flavour characteristics.
Local Food Preserves Genetic Diversity.
Apart from the variety of flavours, locally produced food provide a broad variety of genetic diversity and maintains the long tradition of natural breeding and cross fertilisation.
